Salgaram or Shaligram is a fossilized shell used as an iconic symbol in South Asia and is a universal doctrine by Hindus of Vaishnava and Smartist sects as a remembrance of Lord Vishnu. Shaligrams are usually collected from the river bed or banks such as the Gandaki River in Nepal.
